Reports are coming in today that award winning photographer Tim Hetherington has been killed by a mortar in Misrata, Lybia.

Another award for Kenneth O’Halloran

Earlier this year Ken O'Halloran won World Press and PPAI Awards. Last month he won the March round of the Focus Project. In addition to $2,500 cash and a feature on JPG Magazine’s Blog, Kenneth is now in the running for the Focus Project Grand Prize Award. Simon Cumbers’ Media Fund

The 2011 summer round of funding of the Simon Cumbers’ Media Fund, was launched this week by Minister of State for Trade & Development Jan O’Sullivan. At the launch Minister O'Sullivan focused on the media’s important role to inform and educate “audiences about the hunger, poverty and injustice that afflict so many millions of our fellow human beings and have implications for our future.”

Some of you may be aware of the Photography is Good for Society Campaign. I started this campaign because Cork County Council want to outlaw photography in playgrounds.
To the lay person this may seem a perfectly sensible proposal but there are issues with the draft legislation in principle and as it is actually drafted.
First the easy part - the law is absolutely useless.

Cork County Council seeks to outlaw photography

Cork County Council is currently in consultation on a Playground Bye Law which will outlaw photography in a playground area.The full text is below as a PDF but Item 24 states:

"IN an effort to target paedophiles," Cork County Council is drawing up new bylaws which will make it an offence to take photos of children in playgrounds.
