Portrait Exhibition – Eugene Langan

Photographer Eugene Langan has put together a Portrait Exhibition which will hang as part of the inaugural Phibsborough Art Festival. The exhibition takes place this week and can be found on the 3rd floor of the tower in Phibsborough shopping centre. More details here

The 2010 results of the Federation of European Photographer's award programme have been announced. Kildare's Padraic Deasy was the overall winner of the Portrait Golden Camera Award. Other Irish photographers who scored well were Gerry O'Leary, Vincent O'Byrne, Mark Russell - Hill, Owen O'Connor, Peter O'Donnell, Peter Cox, Kelvin Gillmor, Corin Bishop and Denis Hyland. Recently I took a trip to Louth to meet with retired photographer Paul Kavanagh. Paul has had his work recognised by Louth County Council who now have it on permanent display in the county museum.

Surveillance – Exhibition by Photographer Erin Quinn at the Centre for Creative Practices, Dublin.

In this ongoing project Erin is exploring the rapid rise in surveillance in modern society, particularly in airports. The public welcomed increased security efforts supporting the “war on terror”, willing to accept almost anything to protect themselves from more attacks.
Erin is particularly interested in how the viewer engages with these images and how they may even question their own judgement when doing so.

Pic Agency Boss Refuses to sign restrictive contract.

Earlier this week it was reported that Southampton FC were refusing to accredit photographers who wished to attend their home matches and media organisations should obtain syndicated pictures from Digital South, a local photographic agency.

Historical Photographic Processes

Later this month in The Centre for Creative Practices Ian Mitton will be giving a talk on historic photographic processes. The lecture will investigate the expressive possibilities of the Cyanotype and Van Dyke processes. Different chemistry formulas, emulsions, coating methods and paper choices will be discussed and a selection of works developed using these techniques will be presented. Cameras Stolen in Wexford

I have been asked to ask you to keep an eye out for some cameras that were stolen in Wexford recently. The items taken were a Fuji Panoramic GX 617 with a 90mm, 180mm and 300mm lens - this is a pretty unusual camera system. Also a Pentax 6x7 with a 150mm lens and an X-Pan 35mm camera.

New Photographic Magazine for Ireland

Blow Magazine, which will launch it's first official issue next month is currently looking for entries to their two competitions, one Editorial and one Single Image. The Editorial competition calls for a submission of four to eight images with the winner having their picture narrative published. Their Single Image competition is for one image to be published. The right to privacy is in the dock again. Ms Ruth Hickey is taking an action against the Sunday World over photographs published. It is claimed her right to privacy was breached by the publication of the photographs.
