In argument yesterday at the High Court, Dublin, Senior Counsel, Turlough O’Donnell, described the newspaper as having shown a “merciless contempt” for Ms Hickey’s privacy and that of her son.

The newspaper denies any breach of privacy claiming that the plaintiff had given an interview to “Social and Personal Magazine” prior to the birth and that nowhere was the infant visible in the photographs published.

The case was heard by president of the High Court, Mr Justice Nicholas Kearns and judgement has been reserved.

For a while, James Bowden’s photography was an enigma too me. It was just too hard to imagine that a single person could be responsible for photography that spans such a range of topics and styles. To me, his website looked like meeting place for an artist’s collective rather than the portfolio of a single creative mind.

On closer inspection, there is an overarching style. It reminds me of Eileen Garcia’s work, which I think has such a freedom to it. The same goes for James’s work. He photographs without fetters.

And that fits well with his description of himself: “James bowden is a photographer, surfer and aspiring vagabond. An Englishman born and bred with a thirst for travel and adventure. With a bag of photographic classics and the latest digi equipment, he’s out there looking for stories to tell the grandkids and photos to show them as well.”

He meanders and wanders and sees and captures and lives and engages and photographs. The resulting work, in my eyes anyway, is terrific.

What especially appeals to me is that he doesn’t confine himself. He shoots everything with equal liberty and passion – and shows it on his blog or website. He doesn’t distinguish between commercial work and private work. It’s all his photography.

His photography is a photographic experience and a life experience rolled into one.

I have to wonder whether that isn’t the future of our business.

How do I know all this? Because I got to know the couple through email. They spilled out all of the above over a half dozen emails spanning the guts of a year. There were no ‘this is how we describe ourselves’ emails, or me giving them the Spanish inquisition. The information was just leaked through talking about various topics. Their photos went on to be featured in several publications and received 4 IPPA awards.

In the last year, more and more brides are starting their own wedding blogs. Blogs charting the preparation of a wedding from a bride’s point of view offer a fascinating insight into how my customers think. What’s important to them? What sort of style do they have? What theme will their wedding be? It also helps me to learn a lot more about the personalities of the bride and groom, even more than a face to face meeting or a phone call, and perhaps even more than the emails I exchanged with the couple above.

I was delighted when one of my brides, Miss C, contacted me during the week asking if she could use some of my pictures for her blog, This Little Journey. Miss C, you see, lives in Perth. We exchanged only a couple of emails, and then she booked me. Now that she has a blog, however, I can get to know her and ‘Groomie’ a lot better. I know now that she’s a fan of StyleMePretty and Once Wed. I know she’s having two ceremonies; one in Australia and one in Ireland (still miffed she’s not flying me out to Oz to photograph the first leg). I also know she’s very, very funny. So all in all, I’m much better equipped now to capture exactly what Miss C is looking for on her wedding day. I’m looking forward to her wedding big time, I have a feeling it’s gonna be a blast.

So, my question to any brides (or grooms) who have me booked is: Do You Blog? If so, post the address in the comments and let me stalk you a bit. Just for fun, you won’t need to call the police or anything, and I only stalk from 9am to 5pm 5 days a week, so nothing freaky.

Here at photographers.ie  headquarters we are putting together a competition for wedding photographers and we want to see if you, somebody getting married in the future, would like to be involved in judging it.

We haven’t worked out the full mechanics of the competition but we do know we want the public involved.

This will be the first competition where all professional photographers in Ireland can enter – and you, the brides and grooms of Ireland, are the judges.

I suppose we all have a certain idea of how an accountant should look or should behave, so when pitching to the client, I wanted to take the images for their brochure in a slightly different direction. As the brief was “a day in the life of a graduate” shot in a reportage style, I wanted the images to have a lively and upbeat feel while at the same time appear smart, professional and international. A high dynamic range retouch was added to give the pictures that extra edge, and hopefully appeal to the young potential graduates looking at the pictures.

All the pictures were shot in and around the Dublin office on Earlsfort Terrace. We cast the models from the Deloitte staff, all great fun on the day and brilliant at taking direction.
