David Cantwell photographing Terry O'Neill

Are you unchallenged by your photography? Maybe it is not inspiring you or it simply bores you.

All creatives go through dry periods from time to time – but it is how you deal with it that sets you apart.

Recently award winning photographer David Cantwell told photographers.ie that in late 2008 he was experiencing a low period in his creativity.  He felt his photography was stale (despite winning numerous awards) and wanted to set himself a task that would tax his talents and fulfill his creative requirements.  A meeting with friend and photographer Ricky Stevens set him on a new project.  Ricky had an interesting face and David asked could he do a portrait of him.

This portrait got Cantwell thinking and in early 2009 while on a self development course (with photographer Jeffrey Scott in Los Angeles) Cantwell hit upon the idea for a personal project – he decided to make portraits of photographers he admires. He contacted the nearby studio of Greg Gorman who agreed to be photographed.

To date Cantwell has photographed 25 of the world’s leading photographers including David La Chappelle, John Minihan and Erwin Olaf.  He spent last week in the US photographing Arny Freytag, in The Playboy Studio Hollywood and Mike Rosenthal, in Beverley Hills.

So if you experience a low creatively – challenge yourself – you never know where it will lead you….
