Forget the surgeon’s knife – Get a photographer!

In today’s Irish Times Edel Morgan has an interesting article on retouching wedding and portrait photographers.  Studio and social photographers have always done retouching and the degree of retouching has varied over the years.

At Focus earlier this year I was astounded by the number of photographers falling over themselves to buy software which, with a couple of clicks, could transform the jaw line, thin the face, raise the cheek bones and enlarge the eyes – the whole effect was a Bambi like portrait. It’s not to everyone’s taste but there is a demand for it.

If you are looking to get a portrait done and retouching is an issue do consult with your photographer and ask to see examples.  Costs will also be a factor that should be considered.  In the article a photograph was worked on for an hour and a half – such work will naturally have to be paid for.

Portrait retouching? Maybe. But wedding retouching? That’s just plain daft – at an hour and a half per image, I can’t imagine that anyone would want an entire wedding album retouched to that extent.

As for retouching software, other than plain old Photoshop, I haven’t seen any of it that works well, unless of course one like the plastic Barbie Doll look in humans!
