SUMMER-US’ – A photographic time capsule

Summer-us is a dramatic and eye catching photographic random sample of the ever-changing population of Cork City – almost like a spot check on the City’s history. Award-winning photojournalist Mike MacSweeney started a three-year photographic project to capture the city’s constantly evolving community during the Cork Midsummer Festival last year. He roamed the city, photographing over two thousand people at work and play, shopping, walking or passing by. The subjects were all captured against the same white background and almost 200 of those images will be hung on display in the English Market, in Cork City from the 20th June as part of the Cork Midsummer Festival.
Mike MacSweeney used a mobile photo studio (‘ The Tent’) to capture his subjects who were all random passers by in June 2005. From World War 2 vets to school kids, sportsmen to supporters, taxi drivers, sailors, actors, bouncers, musicians, grandparents, mothers, brothers, sisters, musicians and poets: the collection to be unveiled on the 20th June is as varied as the people that pass you in a city everyday.
